When it comes to spectrum auctions, Brett Tarnutzer, Founding Member of BTconsultancy LLC, really has Been There!
He received a Master’s Degree from Northwestern University, specializing in their telecommunications management, technology and policy program. He received a fellowship from the Annenberg program to work on telecommunications policy at the Federal Communications Commission, and this connection launched his career in the industry. He began working on auctions at the FCC from their first implementation in 1994 and eventually became the Chief of Operations for the auction program. He was a co-organizer of the FCC’s first Wye River Conference on combinatorial bidding, which sought to develop a workable system of combinatorial bidding for spectrum.
From the FCC, Brett moved to become a Vice President at Wallman Consulting LLC, where he worked closely with Kathleen Wallman, a former deputy counsel to President Bill Clinton, on a wide range of matters that included auctions, universal service, satellite service and rural phone initiatives.
Brett then began applying his keen eye for software design to the FCC’s auction system by joining Computech, Inc., a Bethesda, MD based software firm. At Computech, Brett became the Project Manager for the FCC’s auction research and auction system development program.
After four challenging years of designing and building the Integrated Spectrum Auction System, Brett decided to start his own venture, BTconsultancy LLC, where he will get to do a bit of everything he enjoys, from auction consulting to software design to telecommunication policy consulting.
Recently, Brett started a collaboration with Karen Wrege called KB Enterprises LLC. Brett and Karen have already started developing maps of spectrum holdings and are working on some advanced auction software for both bidders and auctioneers. Stay tuned for more!
